Nauru Parliament review Standing Orders with support from Victoria Parliament

16/03/2026

The Nauru Parliament Standing Orders Committee has held a series of meetings with officials from the Parliament of Victoria in Australia from 9 to 10 March 2026, marking the first major review of Nauru’s Standing Orders since the Parliament was established in 1968.

Led by the Committee Chair, Hon. Marcus Stephen, the Speaker of the Nauru Parliament, the delegation has made strong progress on revisions that will be captured in the Committee’s report. This work represents a significant step toward strengthening democratic processes, enhancing parliamentary efficiency and building a resilient Legislature for the future of Nauru.

The Nauru and Victoria Parliaments’ partnership was established under the twinning framework of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association which promotes collaboration between Parliaments in the CPA Pacific and CPA Australia Regions. It provides a structured platform to strengthen parliamentary democracy, enhance professional development and foster closer institutional ties.

During the visit, President of the Victoria Legislative Council, Hon. Shaun Leane, MLC hosted the Nauru delegation for a special luncheon which included a viewing of one of the Parliament’s Committee rooms named ‘Eragow’ – the Nauruan word for their parliamentary mace and a tribute to the traditions and heritage of the Nauru Parliament.

In a special gesture by the Victoria Parliament celebrating its twinning relationships, three of its Committee rooms are being named to celebrate its twinning Parliaments – Fiji, Nauru and Tuvalu – a symbol of friendship, respect and the enduring bonds between the Parliaments.
