The Speakers of the Papua New Guinea and Queensland Parliaments have re-signed a Parliamentary Partnership Agreement reaffirming a decade-long commitment to cooperation, institutional strengthening and regional parliamentary diplomacy.
The Speaker of the Papua New Guinea Parliament, Hon. Job Pomat, CMG, MP, and the Speaker of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, Hon. Pat Weir, MP, signed the renewed Agreement during a formal ceremony in Brisbane, Australia, attended by Parliamentarians and senior parliamentary officials on 26 February 2026. The partnership was established under the twinning framework of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association which promotes collaboration between Parliaments in the CPA Pacific and CPA Australia Regions. It provides a structured platform to strengthen parliamentary democracy, enhance professional development and foster closer institutional ties.
Officials from both Parliaments highlighted the importance of continued engagement through CPA regional mechanisms, noting that capacity-building initiatives and institutional collaboration contribute to improved governance, transparency and legislative effectiveness.
Other attendees included the Assistant Minister to the Premier and Leader of the House, Hon. Dr Christian Rowan, MP; Kala Aufa, Clerk of the Papua New Guinea Parliament and Neil Laurie, Clerk of the Queensland Parliament.
